The Windows of Onslow County

We know what you’re thinking: what’s up with Onslow County? It doesn’t often get a lot of press because it’s not a major filming location, but it has character all its own. Mostly, Onslow County is known for the military base in Jacksonville, fishing, and, of course, that southeastern Carolina staple — the beaches. Below, we’ve looked at a few common Onslow County towns and the type of home you might find there.

Jacksonville — Military Family Home: Camp Lejeune Marine Corps Base makes Jacksonville an unusual kind of city. It’s busy and there’s a lot of families, but they tend to move in and out quickly as their assignments change. This presents an interesting problem when it comes to home design.

If you’re part of a military family, you know you’re going to move every few years. But that doesn’t necessarily mean you want to spend those years living with the same drab window treatments the person who lived in the house before you had.

If this is true for you, let us help! At Strickland’s Blinds, Shades, & Shutters, we have a wide variety of products that are affordable, high quality, and easy to install. We’ve been serving the Onslow County area for 75 years, and our professional knowledge spans the ins and outs of the area, the homes, and the people—not to mention the climate, which is no small factor when it comes to window treatments.

Surf City — Beach Condo: Surf City is a small beach town located on Topsail Island. Its main draw is its beachfront land; to capitalize on that, residents often live in beach condos or townhouses.

When you live at the beach, ecofriendly design is the name of the game. A beach condo view is best complimented by a natural wood shade. They’re made from natural, renewable woods, like bamboo, and you can buy them lined or unlined, depending on how much light and heat you want to let in during those hot summer days.

But — and this is important — beachfront property is also storm-front property. For that reason, we’d also suggest Bahama shutters, which are exterior shutters that help protect your windows from strong winds. (Better safe than sorry!)

Swansboro — Retirement Communities: Swansboro, N.C., is a quaint little town—2,663 people at the last census—that’s best known for its fishing. Boating is such an important feature of town life that many Swansboro restaurants are along the marinas and typically allow boaters to dock outside when they’re eating. Many Swansboro residents are former tourists who decided to move there when they retired.

In Swansboro, you’ll see a lot of Carolina craftsman and plantation-style homes. To us, that means two things: easy-breezy curtains and plantation shutters. These are the peanut butter and jelly of Southern window treatments — trust us. Curtains are casual; shutters are classy. Put them together, and you’ve got the perfect Southern combo.

Sneads Ferry – New Neighborhoods/Track Homes: Sneads Ferry is an up-and-coming town — the second-largest in Onslow County. It used to be known primarily as a fishing hamlet, but in recent years there’s been a surge of development as new residents have flooded into the area, which means the town is currently poised for a big economic boost.

If you’re moving into one of Sneads Ferry’s newest neighborhoods, you’ll want unique window treatments to ensure your home stands out from the rest. Luckily, this is what Strickland’s Home does best.
