The cover of the October 1942 issue of Ladies’ Home Journal

In 1942, James Strickland started Strickland Venetian Blind Works as a manufacturer and dealer of wooden venetian blinds. At the time, Humphrey Bogart was kissing Ingrid Bergman goodbye in movie theaters screening Casablanca, and Bing Crosby had a holiday hit with the tune “White Christmas.” If you drove to our original store, you might have heard famous bandleaders Glenn Miller and Harry James playing on the radio. Popular magazines like Ladies Home Journal advised using blinds or sheers with fabric valances and curtains made of floral printed fabrics for the most up-to-date home fashions.

Since those days, we’ve seen the world of business change in many ways, with the increasing use of online resources, computers, and other efficient features that make it easier and faster for businesses. Other things have changed at Strickland’s Home over the past seven decades, too. Now, we have new technologies that would have seemed amazing in the first years of our family business, like UV-blocking window treatments and automatic, remote-operated blinds.

We’ve also expanded our offerings in hundreds of ways, with everything from soft window treatments to customized closets, to meet the needs of an increasingly diverse and sophisticated clientele. Gone are the days of one big trend in window treatments for everyone. Instead, you—and your home—are the center of the process. We have a variety of styles and options to choose from in window treatments, in a range that encompasses modern, sleek designs and classic tastes, all on display in our large showroom.

However, one thing remains the same: our “old school” approach to customer service, which includes our desire to communicate with our customers in the most effective ways possible. With us, you can feel confident about getting the best of both worlds: the new window treatments you love and the old-fashioned customer service that you can’t find anywhere else!

In this blog, we will talk about trends, style, treatments, repair procedures, news at Strickland’s, our experienced employees and, yes, we might even reminisce about those classic window treatments from the 1940’s! After all, retro window treatments are experiencing a rebirth in the wake of popular shows like Mad Men, according to many news outlets.

We hope you’ll check in regularly; we look forward to sharing the latest news, trends, ideas and technologies on our blog.
