The World’s Most Expensive Window Coverings

When it comes to window coverings, the options are nearly endless. While it can be easy to find quality curtains, shades, and blinds on any budget, some people prefer to spend inordinate amounts on extravagant luxuries. Marie Antoinette’s Curtains:  The Fleur de Lys is one of the most expensive mansions in Los Angeles, and that’s saying something. Worth over 125 million dollars, it includes 12 bedrooms, fifteen bathrooms, a fifty-seat theater, a ballroom, a gym, and a pool house, among other luxuries. The interior of the house is decorated with 24-karat gold, and the rooms feature luxury window coverings designed by former Queen of France Marie Antoinette, who’s frivolous spending is said to have contributed to the start of the French Revolution.

The $6,000 Shower Curtain: By now, most people have heard of Tyco International’s former chairman and chief executive, Dennis Kozlowski and his excessive spending.  (He was accused of defrauding his company of $600 million. What he’s most known for, however, is the shower curtain he spent $6,000 on – a beautiful but extravagant indulgence, woven with actual gold. We can only imagine what the rest of his bathroom looks like!

The Swarovski Crystal Curtain:  In 2009, the Academy Awards got an extra dose of glitz and glamor, thanks to a three-ton, 60-foot tall custom designed Swarovski crystal curtain, sparkling with over 100,000 crystals. This tapestry of cascading crystal and light nearly stole the show from the stars who were being celebrated. Unfortunately, the curtain isn’t for sale – probably because no one could afford it!

Cleopatra’s Trailer:  In 2012, the trailer used by Elizabeth Taylor during the filming of the classic film “Cleopatra” was for sale. The interior of the trailer features rose-colored carpet, hand painted ceilings and murals, intricate crown molding, and columned furniture. One of the most beautiful details is the set of silk curtains that hang in semi-circular patterns to form a partition between the bedroom and the living area, an intentional design added to make Taylor feel more like the famed Egyptian queen who she was playing.
