I Want To Cover A Challenging Window
Most windows are the same standard shape – rectangular, with predictable 90-degree angles. Then there’s that subset of window that breaks the mold. Some people refer to these windows as “oddly-shaped,” but we prefer to think of them as “challenging” or, better yet, “unique.”
Whatever you decide to call them, we can all agree that these windows have many benefits. They can make a dramatic statement, serve as a stunning focal point, and offer a creative solution for brightening up a dark room.

Just like any window, however, there are times when you want to “close the curtain”, whether to maintain privacy, control light, or simply keep the room cool during the hottest part of the day. The more unusual the shape of your window, the more challenging the task of finding the right window treatment will be. Luckily, at Strickland’s Home, we’ve seen our share of unique window shapes, and we’ve found the perfect solution for each of them!
Angled Windows: A window with a dramatic angle at the top is a great way to add a few extra inches of light into a room. The sharp angle, however, makes it impossible to install a standard set of blinds or a curtain rod. Bottom up shades, on the other hand, are a great solution. These are mounted at the windowsill and pulled up, rather than down, to cover the window, making it easy to fit the angle without worrying about how to hang the covering.
Arched Windows: Classic and beautiful, arched windows bring interest to otherwise traditional rooms. Rather than cover these architectural flourishes with a straight curtain rod, try custom valances that echo the shape of the arch. They’re also a great opportunity to incorporate a splash of color or a bold pattern. Another option is a flexible curtain rod. Just make sure you get curtain rings that lock into place, or your drapes will slide to the side!
Plantation shutters are made-to-order and can be crafted in almost any shape. The movable louvers help control light when the shutters are closed. Honeycomb shades can also be made to fit an arched window. They can be stationary or movable, and they come in both light-filtering and room-darkening fabrics.
Other options for arched windows include horizontal blinds, draperies and some specialty products like the Highlite.
Bay Windows: Large and graceful, bay windows flood a room with beautiful natural light. When you’re ready to wind down in evening, a long, straight curtain rod across the window with floor-to-ceiling panels is a great way create privacy. When opened, they provide a decorative frame. Closed, and the room is instantly transformed into a cozy retreat.
High Windows: Very high windows are similar to skylights. They allow natural light to flood the room, and provide a welcome peek of blue sky and trees. To control light, try a set of rustic shutters. These can be opened, closed, or cracked just a little to allow different amounts of light in. They also add a lovely touch of architectural interest to the room.
Sliding Glass Doors: Vertical shadings like Luminettes and Adowrap work great on sliding doors. They both can be traversed to one side (or both) as well as tilted open and closed like a vertical blind. Both use soft sheer fabrics to diffuse any harsh light yet still allow outward visibility.
Vertical blinds are hard to beat from a price/function perspective. Less expensive than most other treatments, they achieve light control by adjusting the angle of the louvers and can be pulled back to leave the door completely uncovered.
Sliding panels are also an option and are available in solar shade, roller shade, and woven wood fabrics as well as drapery materials. Other options include vertical honeycomb shades and draperies.
Transom Windows: Transom windows horizontal or rectangular windows placed directly above a door window.. Often found in bedrooms and bathrooms, they provide access to natural light in the daytime. At night, however, these are the spaces where privacy is at a premium. To provide options for control that don’t compromise the view, custom fitted blinds are a great option; they can be easily lowered when the sun goes down, but cleanly tucked away during the daylight hours.
